I recently got bored with our regular chicken rotation and cold weather. Which started me thinking of warm climes. Right in the middle of giving Southwestern Roast Chicken a try, I wanted to see what would happen if the bird were smeared with a little chili sauce. The snag? I’ve never ever had chili sauce in the house.
No worries! After all, how hard can it be to make it myself? Turns out, making a great chili sauce is not hard at all!
Some quick research. A bit of tweaking. Time to give it a final taste test.

UPDATE 20 March, 2017 – Mr. Nest and I were recently in Hope Town in the Bahamas visiting friends when I ran out of my toner (that I buy here these days and like very much). We were on a small cay with limited shopping. What to do?
I headed here to my own post from a few years ago and threw an abbreviated version of this together using 2 ounces filtered water, about 1/8 teaspoon (or less) ACV and a few drops of AMEO’s Pure Tranquility essential oil blend. It still works great! Which leaves me wondering… why did I stop making my own?
Apple Cider Vinegar is the main active ingredient in my toner and I’ve been very satisfied with it for about a year now. However, my skin has begun feeling a little too tight after toning. I blame Winter. Tweaking it (the toner, not Winter… although, hmmm!) has been on my mind, but it’s taken awhile to decide what to do about it.
So, it simmered on the back burner while daily life continued.
I’m sick with strep throat which, by an immunizing fluke of my mom having had strep while pregnant with me, is something that almost never happens to me! So I’m feeling pretty pathetic and sorry for myself.
At the time of this post, I’ve just reached that magical hour where antibiotics have been coursing through my body and eliminating the threat of contamination among the population at large. I should feel better by now, right? Uh… No. That turned out to be not true.
So here I wallow in my misery. Watching weird shows on TNT surrounded by tea, water, acetaminophen, active-bacteria yogurt (to keep my sensitive gut relatively healthy while under siege by indiscriminate antibiotics) other snackies, Ricola galore and my doggies. But this throat is just so uncomfortable! (Waa Waa Waa!)
I’ve collected volumes of e-posts and books on natural healing, a habit that my lovely husband quietly tolerates in the firm knowledge that I believe they’ll come in handy someday. Well, that time has arrived! A search on my laptop found several forgotten (by me) remedies for sore throats. I was leaning toward a mix of honey, lemon and tea, but in an inopportune oversight, have no lemons in the house. Not one! SO back to a very simple combination that includes (organic) apple cider vinegar. Sounds yukky, but what the heck. Desperate times.
Apple cider vinegar is soooo good for you that it has its own acronym (ACV!) but I wasn’t too sure about swallowing it with this heat in my throat. ACV (so proud of using this for the very first time in “print”!) has many, many health benefits, one of which is to help keep your gut healthy! There are lots of places to look this up online and someday I might dedicate a whole post to this amazing natural remedy. But not today. Today, I’m too busy wallowing (refer to above).
So I mixed this stuff up and guess what! It tastes pretty good! And it really feels great on the throat!! This is my version of a popular sore throat remedy …
4 Tablespoons (1/4 cup) organic, raw honey – local is best if you can find it
2 Tablespoons organic apple cider vinegar (I like Braggs with the mother – that cloudy stuff at the bottom of the bottle)
4 Tablespoons of hot, organic tea – I used throat coat but licorice or camomile sound good too
Put it all in a jar, twist the lid on tightly, and shake until well-mixed.
To use, shake and pour out about 1 tablespoon into a clean spoon and take it like you would cough syrup.
The cider tingles for about 3 seconds and then your throat starts to feel pretty relieved!
How awesome is that?! Handy ingredients, easy and fast fast to make AND it’s good for you!!!
