part of the I’ve Got a Secret series
To keep my skin healthy and looking younger, I started using non-toxic goodies like face cleanser, shower wash and body lotion. But they can be expensive and you still might not know what’s really in them.
About a year ago, I began the gradual journey toward making my own skin care products. At first, it was rather intimidating. There was a LOT of research to be done and then experimentation. I also dragged my feet a bit. I was scared. What if they didn’t work? How long would it take my skin to recover if it’s awful and I had to go back to the tried and true products? Would my skin recover?
When it comes to health and aging, I will not go down without a fight!
What surprised me over the year was how much better my skin started to look as I replaced my commercial “age-avoiding” products with all natural, non-toxic MIY’s (Make-It-Yourself)!
In hindsight, it should have been an obvious conclusion.
Taking one of my first dips into the non-toxic beauty pool, I made this makeup remover. It is so EASY, INEXPENSIVE, GENTLE and actually GOOD for you that I cannot believe how many years I wasted my money and the health of my skin on chemically questionable products. There is nothing fancy about this, but it works. Beautifully!
Rose Petal and Olive Oil Eye Makeup Remover
Makes 3 ounces (perfect for travel!)
What’s in it…
2 Tablespoons (30 ml) extra virgin olive oil (look in your kitchen cabinet!) – this is what I use in the kitchen
2 Tablespoons (30 ml) rose petal* witch hazel made without alcohol – Buy it Here
1 Tablespoon (15 ml) purified or filtered water – look for it at your supermarket or pharmacy
* You may use any infusion of non-alcohol witch hazel for this. I started with cucumber but then found, and fell in love with, rose petal. Of course, that would have meant calling it cucumber and olive oil eye makeup remover. Hm. Not a bad title, actually!
How to pull it toghether…
Measure everything directly into a travel-sized (3-ounce/90 ml) bottle with dispenser cap. Shake it up. Done!
Shake the bottle to remix the ingredients. Squeeze a little onto a clean cotton cosmetic round or cotton ball. Gently hold against each eye for 3 or 4 seconds to start melting mascara and eyeliner. Gently wipe eyes toward the bridge of your nose to remove the rest of your eye makeup.
Wash your face with Honey and Glycerin Face Cleanser.
If you’re nervous like I was, try starting here. I think you’ll like how your skin feels and be encouraged to add more homemade, non-toxic products to your daily skin care regimen!
